Charlton Newsagency, G&J Tonkin Auto Electrical and House to Home were all category winners at the inaugural Buloke Shire Council Business Excellence Awards.
On Friday the 9th of May the Business excellence awards were held at the Birchip Leisure centre. The awards had approximately 70 entrants from all around the Shire of Buloke, there were 11 categories and many businesses from Charlton entered the prestigious event. Judges went through grueling hours of work to choose finalists for each of the categories. A formal dinner was held with a presentation from Allen Green the owner of Green Eggs and the winner of the Weekly Times Business of the year. Also congratulations to Steve Bourke for winning the young entrepreneur award (under 35 years of age).
G&J Tonkin Auto Electrical— Winner of Best Trade BusinessGary and Judy Tonkin saw an opening for their auto electrical business and moved to Charlton in 1985. Gary provides the technical knowledge and Judy keeps him in line in the administration and office area. Tonkin's Auto Electrical has two apprentices and 3 full time employees. Over the years they have picked up unique dealerships for a number of firms consistent with their technical and marketing expertise. Training has been provided in automotive air-conditioning and mobile phones up to the 3G standard. In 2007 they started working with GPS- Ag Services, assisting farmers to adapt to change and innovation in agriculture.
